Rules of the Game
The
Rules of the Game are established to make the game go smoothly
and hasle-free. When a referee is present, his call or decision
is law unless it is in direct violation of the rules set forth
herein. Protests may be brought to the league organizer (Richard
Williamson).
Fort
Myers Box Lacrosse Rules and Regulations are basically the
same as field lacrosse except:
A.
Number of Players. Each team has five fielders plus
one goalie on the field at a time. For safety reasons, you
must close and latch the gate that opens onto
the field as you enter or exit the field. First incident
receives a warning; seond a 30-second bench penalty.
B.
Sticks. Fielders' sticks may not be shorter than
40" or longer than 46". Goalies' sticks have the same length
restrictions as field lacrosse. Players using box sticks
may not face off.
C.
Checking.
-
League
play - No checking except for stick checks on gloves
and hand that is holding stick. Constant pressure holds
are legal. Otherwise, regular field lacrosse rules apply.
-
Tournament
play - Unless otherwise agreed between teams or
as stated in specific tournament rules, full checking
is allowed with the same penalty rules as field lacrosse
for illegal checks (no cross-checks or boarding: a player
may not body check another player within two feet of
the walls.)
D.
Fighting
-
Any
players fighting will be ejected from the game.
-
Any
player(s) leaving the bench area or joining in the fight
will also be ejected.
-
Any
player ejected from a game will also be suspended from
the next week's game.
-
Any
player ejected for a second time will be suspended from
league play without refund of membership fees.
-
If
a goalie is ejected for fighting, one of the other players
on that team must take over the goalie's place. A new
goalie not on the roster may be recruited for the next
week's game.4. Offsides. There are no
offsides infractions in box lacrosse.
E.
Offsides. There are no offsides infractions in box
lacrosse.
F.
Goalie movement limitations - Goalies are not permitted
past the red (center) line.
G.
Face offs All players (except the two men facing
off) may not cross the restraining lines (red face-off circles)
until after the referee has declared possession. There are
face-offs after each goal.
H.
Time keeping and stalling. The game is played in
two 25-minute halves with a five-minute half time. Game
is normally played "running time" except in a situation
of prolonged interruption (e.g. serious game-stopping injury
- limp off the court if you are able!). There are no
"time outs." Tie your shoes on your own time. The ball is
played off the walls or ceiling without interruption to
the game. If the ball goes out of the rink, the team with
possession (i.e. the team that did not knock it out of bounds)
will run to get it and get it back in play. There
will be three stalling rules in effect for the entire
game:
- once
a team has possession of the ball, the team must move
the ball to the offensive half of the field within 10
seconds;
- the
offensive team must shoot the ball within 30 seconds of
initial possession; and
- once
the ball is on the offensive half of the field, it must
not travel back to the defensive half except for a deflected
shot. If a team violates rules 1 or 2, the opponent will
be given the ball at midfield. If a team violates rule
3, the ref will handle the situation as a "play on" until
it is clear that the team entitled to take possession
is not moving to play the ball at which point they will
be awarded the ball at mid field. For purposes of the
above rule a shot on goal must hit the goal or the goalie,
otherwise it will not be considered a "shot".
I.
All team rosters are final once the season begins.
Walk-ons or substitutes permitted only with the permission
of the league organizer (Richard
Williamson). The only players who may be substituted
for are goalies who are injured or unavailable. Any non-goalie
substitutions or walk-ons will result in a forfeited game.
Teams may be balanced by the league after one or two weeks
of play if there is a problem.
J.
Goals will be standard hockey goals.
K.
Out of bounds - after the ball goes out of bounds,
possession is awarded to the team which did not touch it
last (i.e. the team that did not knock it out of bounds).
Play begins at the center red line or at the corner closest
to where the ball went out.
L.
Start time - Games will start promptly at 10pm.
Be early. Games will end after two halves expire.
