Battle in the Box
Southwest Florida Indoor Lacrosse Tournament
Rules and Regulations

The Rules of the Game are established to make the game go smoothly and hassle-free. When a referee is present, his call or decision is law unless it is in direct violation of the rules set forth herein. Protests may be brought to the head referee or tournament organizer (Richard Williamson).

Battle in the Box Indoor Lacrosse Tournament Rules and Regulations are basically the same as field lacrosse except:

A. Number of Players. Each team has five fielders plus one goalie on the field at a time. For safety reasons, you must close and latch the gate that opens onto the field as you enter or exit the field. Failure to do so results in a warning; second incident results in a 30-second bench penalty.

B. Sticks. Sticks shall be standard outdoor lacrosse sticks subject to the same regulations of pocket depth, sidewall width and proper maintenance and condition as per outdoor rules. Fielders' sticks may not be shorter than 40" or longer than 46". Goalies' sticks have the same length restrictions as field lacrosse.

C. Checking. Unless otherwise agreed between teams or as stated in specific tournament rules, full checking is allowed with the same penalty rules as field lacrosse for illegal checks (no cross-checks or boarding: a player may not body check another player toward the boards when the checked player is within two feet of the boards.)

D. Fighting.

  1. Any players fighting will be ejected from the game.

  2. Any player(s) leaving the bench area or joining in the fight will also be ejected.

  3. Any player ejected for a second time will be suspended from tournament play without refund of tournament fees. Team may not replace the player.

  4. If a goalie is ejected for fighting, one of the other players on that team must take over the goalie's place. If the goalie is ejected from the tournament, his team must replace him from the existing roster.

E. Offsides. There are no offsides infractions in box lacrosse except if the goalie crosses the midfield line.

F. Goalie movement limitations. Goalies are not permitted past the red (center) line.

G. Face-offs. All players (except the two men facing off) may cross the restraining lines (blue face-off circles) as soon as the whistle blows starting play. There are face-offs after each goal.

H. Time keeping and stalling. The game is played in two 20-minute halves with a five-minute half time. Game is normally played "running time" except in a situation of prolonged interruption (e.g. serious game-stopping injury - otherwise, limp off the court if you are able!).

I. Time Outs. Each team has one 30-second time out during each half of play.

J. Out of Bounds. The ball is played off the walls or ceiling without interruption to the game. Nets behind the goal areas are considered in-bounds. If the ball travels out of the playing area and bounces back into play WITHOUT HITTING A PERSON, the ball is LIVE and play procedes without interruption. If the ball travels out of the playing area and hits a person or does not bounce back into play, it is ruled dead. Play begins at the center red line or corner closest to where the ball went out in possession of the team which DID NOT have possession of or touch it immediately prior to its going out of bounds.

K. Stalling.

There are two stalling rules in effect for the entire game:

  1. once a team has possession of the ball, the team must move the ball to the offensive half of the field within 10 seconds;
  2. the offensive team must shoot the ball within 30 seconds of initial possession; and
  3. If a team violates stalling rules, the opponent will be given the ball at midfield. For purposes of the above rule a shot on goal must clearly be an attempt to hit the goal or the goalie, otherwise it will not be considered a "shot".

L. All team rosters are final once the tournament begins. Walk-ons or substitutes permitted only with the permission of the tournament organizer (Richard Williamson) and only in the event of injury to the original roster player. Replaced players may not return to the active roster. Illegal substitutions or walk-ons will result in a forfeited game.

M. Goals will be standard hockey goals.

N. Start time - Games will start promptly on the hour AT THEIR POSTED TIME (according to the clock in the lacrosse arena) at their posted time unless delayed by injury or schedule conflicts out of control of the teams scheduled to play. Be early. Games will end after two halves expire. A ten-minute cushion is built-in between games for warm-up and preparation. Due to injuries or stoppages in play, the ten minutes is NOT GUARANTEED! Teams that are not ready to play at the start time will be penalized one goal for every minute missed!

O. Taking and leaving the field - Because scheduling is tight, teams must vacate the player bench immediately after the end of their games to make way for the incoming teams.

P. Penalties - Same infractions as in outdoor lacrosse, all receive a 30-second penalty EXCEPT boarding, which takes a 60-second penalty. Penalized players serve their penalties in the penalty box during which time their teams are short-handed. Penalties are released upon scoring against the penalized team.
